On-Page SEO

Holy, I can’t believe I had to write all that content just to get you to the exciting part of on-page SEO and how we start killing it online. Before you proceed, be sure you’ve installed the Yoast SEO plug-in within your WordPress site.

For this section of the lesson, let’s recap and identify what our mission is. We have the following Branding, Business Name, URL, and Keyword focus.

Business: TIP Services LLC
Branding: Painting, Fencing, Siding, Molding, and Trim
URL – SSL with non-www: https://tipservices.com
Beginning Focus Keywords: Seattle Painters

Title Tags

A title tag is an HTML element, which is easy to control within the Yoast SEO WordPress plug-in, that specifies the title of a web page.

Title tags are displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs) as the clickable headline, and can usually be seen at the top of an open tab within your web browser. Title tags are important for usability, SEO, and social sharing.

Given the above with what we’ve started, we want our title tag to help rank for a keyword, and it must make the user want to click to your page. With that being said, I’d feel good about using any of the following as a title tag.

Note that we are not targeting our homepage in this example.

  • Local Seattle Painters – TIP Services (555) 555-5555
  • Seattle Painters – Residential & Commercial Painting in Seattle
  • Top Seattle Painting Contractors –TIP Services (555) 555-5555
  • Best Painters in Seattle – Interior & Exterior Painting Services

Meta Description

A meta description is a tag in HTML that summarizes a page’s content. Search engines show the meta description in search results and are a very important aspect of on-page SEO. We’ll want to mix in supporting keywords, but don’t keyword stuff your description. Make it readable and user-friendly.

Note that if you use the phone number in the Title Tag, you will not use it in the description.

Header Tags

Oh how these excite me, for you see, 95% of websites out there don’t use their HTML Header Tags correctly. These are used to differentiate the headings and sub-headings of a page from the rest of the content. This is how we help tell Google what our web page is all about.

  • h1> Only use this header tag one time per page near the top of the page. This is to tell Google what the most important thing is about your webpage with the h2> and h3> header tags to be used as supporting evidence.

h1> Example:
Seattle Painters
Painters in Seattle
Painting Seattle
Best Seattle Painting Contractors
Best Painters in Seattle

  • h2> Us no more than three times on each page. This is used for supporting content to the h1> tag.

h2> Example:
Fence painting done right
Painting tips for your Seattle home
When to hire a painting contractor
Exterior Painting in the Seattle Climate
Interior Painting
Commercial Painting
Multi-Family Painting

  • h3> Us h3> header tags when you still need to section out your content. Can be used as supporting content for h1> and h2> header tags, but can stray a bit from Keywords if needed.

h3> Example:
Best interior paint for bathrooms
Best exterior paint for homes in Seattle

On-Page Content

Google needs to know what your page is about, so let’s use your targeted keyword phrases with 800-1000 words of on-page comprehensive content to tell your story, the work you do sell it to the end client as to what you’ll provide them. One nice thing about Yoast is they have a built-in tool to help target your Keyword(s) and help you optimize appropriately.

Nobody is better than you at telling your story, but in the event you need help, it’s just one of the many services we provide at Trevari Media.

Optimized Images and Alt Text

Have you ever landed on a page and waited forever and a day for a site to load? One of the causes is that many people don’t optimize image size properly. They’ll upload a 3000×3000 pixel images when all that was needed was 300×300, leading to an image size of several megabytes when the images could have been 1/20th the size if not smaller. The nice thing about using CloudFlare is that extra $20 I mentioned for the Pro plan has tools built into help optimize and cache your site and images.

Now what I think is even more important when it comes to images is to keep in mind that Google can’t read images. If we put up a picture of a purple pony but upload an image file saved as yellowtulip.jpg, Google will never know it’s a purple pony. So the first stage of uploading a file is to name the file properly telling Google what the image is.

Next, we’ll take your image a step further and use what’s called an Alt Attribute that specifies an alternate text for an image if the image cannot be displayed. You’ll do this in your CRM after upload by navigating to your image and adding the description for your image.

Internal and External Linking

This may seem silly, but Google wants to see you linking from other pages of your site, to support the page you are currently working on, but no more than four links from any other page on your site. Also, Google also wants to see you linking out to other sites, especially pages that might compete for visitors. Crazy I know, but trust me that you’ll be rewarded.

Hint: You can use videos, images, URL and anchor text for both internal and exterior linking strategies.
